  • Red Island Resettlement Girl

    When: July 6th, 2025 @ 2:00pm (doors open at 1:00pm)

    Marion Counsel…is from Red Island and was involved in the Resettlement Program in the 1960’s. She was a teenager when her family resettled in the town of Placentia.

    Marion was emersed in music and storytelling from early childhood because there was always an accordion, organ, or guitar in her home, where her siblings and both of her parents played a musical instrument.

    Marion is a retired Registered Nurse, and she is delighted to share some of her life experiences with you in

    “Red Island – Resettlement Girl”

    Barbara O’Keefe is from St. John’s She spent her professional life as a music teacher, in many communities across the island.

    She taught from Primary to High School.

    Since retiring she enjoys participation with “The Philharmonic Choir” and is the director of the “Holy Heart Alumnae choir.”

    Barbara has also enjoyed being part of the performance of

    “Red Island –Resettlement Girl.”

    The Tuckamore Festival takes its name from the tuckamore tree, an evergreen unique to Newfoundland and Labrador and celebrated for its tenacity, strength and special beauty.

    Since 2001, the festival has worked hard to create a two-week event that inspires, excites, provokes, moves, teaches, and mentors. Its extraordinary chamber music series of world-class musicians draws devoted audiences from the Province and beyond.

    About the Band

    Glen Tilley & Bill Rose have been electrifying audiences on intimate stages and in concert halls across the province. Their performances are powerful and engaging. Their repertoire, an homage to the great songwriters and tunesmiths who gave voice to a generation.

    With stops in Greenwich Village, Liverpool, Los Angeles, Nashville and a waltz across Texas, this amazing duo cover a sweeping range including country swing, folk, rockabilly, contemporary singer songwriter material, and original compositions by Rose and Tilley.

    The work of celebrated troubadours Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Chris Stapleton and Ian Tyson, legendary composers Bob Dylan, Lennon & McCartney, Randy Newman, John Prine, Paul Simon, and Ron Hynes all make an appearance. Dazzling instrumental duets from Ray Flacke, The Mavericks, and the Ventures featuring Bill Rose’s virtuosic guitar playing round out the unique set list of this exceptional duo. And the stories they share about the lives and times of these artists are inspiring.

    Bill Rose and Glen Tilley spent their entire creative lives at the heart of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Arts & Entertainment Industry. Their work has been recognized by the Junos, ECMA, MusicNL, Arts NL and the Canada Council. They share a deep love and passion for the music they create and are thrilled to share their newest project.

    The Heart’s Content Mizzen Heritage Society is pleased to present Sherry Ryan in concert .

    ​Having just entertained audiences at the NL Folk Festival in St. John’s, Sherry Ryan is coming to the Heat’s Content Regional Centre for the Arts!  Sherry is known as one of Newfoundland’s finest singer-songwriter of country, blues and folk songs. With the release of four albums over the past ten years, her highly anticipated fifth album, ‘Shout for More’ is scheduled to hit the airwaves in October 2022. Who knows with any luck our audience will get a sneak preview to a song or two from this upcoming album.

  • Walsh Family Band

    The Walsh Family Band is a musical group featuring Ray Walsh and Michelle Walsh Carew. They released an album titled “Years May Come, Years May Go” which was discussed in an interview with Weekend AM’s Heather Barrett on CBC Radio on November 27, 2018.23 The album includes traditional Irish and Newfoundland music, reflecting Ray Walsh’s connection to these musical traditions.

    The Walsh Family Band have called the community of  Bay De Verde home for over a century.  The family has a steep history of talented musicians.  Their love for music has transcended from one generation to the next, culminating in a very talented family band that’s preformed at a variety of venues from kitchen parties to the Mile One Centre. The late and legendary musician Ray Walsh formed the family band with his two brothers, Gerard and Ron, his son Greg and daughter Michelle, in 1995. Since then, the band has released five albums, the most recent being “Years May Come, Years May Go” (2016). Ray Walsh received the Stompin’ Tom Award at the East Coast Music Awards in 2009, and in 2013 he was honoured with the Newfoundland Folk Arts Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
