The Heart’s Content Mizzen Heritage Society is a charitable organization founded in 1994. The purpose of the Society is to preserve, protect, collect and present the history and culture of Heart’s Content for future generations. The Mizzen Heritage Society are the owners/operators of the Mizzen Heritage Museum, the Rendell Forge and the Heart’s Content Regional Centre for the Arts.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Acquired the old United Church School (built around 1920) and restored it as a community museum. In 2018, we added a craft shop.
  • Secured an oral history record from many older citizens.
  • Created a photo exhibit called “Heart’s Content: A Look Back in Time”.
  • Acted as a planning partner for Come Home Year 1997.
  • Assisted Frank Piercey in reviving and safeguarding the “traditional square dance”.
  • Established an Archives Room in our Town Hall.
  • Partnered with our local Rug Hooking Group to sponsor and exhibit rug hooking displays.
  • Partnered with the town to create an observation area lookout.
  • We are a partner in the Town “Fun Days”.
  • Facilitated the creation and installation of town history boards. 
  • Restored the “Rendell Forge“.
  • Restored “The House of Commons”.
  • Partnered with our town to develop and achieve a “Provincial Historic District” designation.
  • We organize an annual Heritage Day in July.
  • Host monthly coffee houses at the Arts Centre on the first Friday of every month April to December.
  • Host monthly concerts at the Arts Centre April to December. See our “More News and Events” page for details.
  • Partnered with the 150th. Anniversary and Come Home Year Committees to plan the 2016 celebrations.
  • Partnered with the Historic Sites Association of NL to host the 2016 Heart’s Content Cable Conference.
  • Acquired the former Heyfield Memorial United Church and restored it as the Heart’s Content Regional Centre for the Arts. It held its official “Grand Opening” June 17-18, 2017. See our “Home and News” and “More News and Events” pages for Arts Centre activities.
  • Won a Historic Sites Association 2018 “Manning Award for Excellence in the Public Presentation of Historic Places” which recognizes and celebrates the work of individuals, communities, and organizations in preserving and presenting this province’s history and heritage. The Manning Award was given to the Mizzen Heritage Society for restoring the 140 year-old Heyfield Memorial United Church and repurposing it as the Heart’s Content Regional Centre for the Arts.
  • ​Have developed a set of “Heart’s Content Municipal Heritage Regulations” which will be adopted and activated by our Town Council during 2020.
